Itinerary Day 1 (Sunday): Kota Kinabalu – Kampung Kiau (Kiau Village)

  • 0800hrs, depart for a two-hour drive to the Crocker Range. Enjoy scenic mountain views on your way to Kg Kiau.
  • Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the village home-stay coordinator before being introduced to your host family. After that, you will be given some time to settle down and familiarize yourself with your host family.
  • Take a walk around the village and enjoy the scenic views of the surroundings or mingle with the villagers and experience their daily routines.
  • You may opt go trekking, join the locals in planting their crops, experience the traditional sports and games, or pick a “GIVE BACK” project with a tree planting program at their water catchment area.
  • You will also be shown the process of making the rice wine which is also known as Linopot Rice, or learn to sculpt your own handicraft before settling down for dinner.
  • Overnight.
  • Meals: Simple local dishes for Lunch, Dinner & Breakfast.
  • Accommodation will be based on Village Home-stay (Room come with very basic necessities).

Itinerary Day 2 (Monday): Kampung Kiau (Kiau Village) – Kinabalu National Park – Poring Hotspring – Sabah Tea Plantation

  • After breakfast, bid farewell and thank your host family for their hospitality.
  • Depart to Kinabalu Park located at about 1,500m above sea level. Kinabalu Park is a botanist’s paradise with over a thousand species of Orchids, numerous specious of Rhododendrons, and Pitcher Plants. The bird life, most species being montane and several which are endemic, is equally fascinating. Explore one of the many trails that lead through the tropical Mountain Oak and Chestnut Forest.
  • After lunch, proceed to Poring Hotsprings. Poring Hotsprings is lowland Dipterocarp Forest and is an excellent place to view lowland birds and some mammals. A short trek takes you to the canopy walkway for a bird’s eye view of the Tropical Rainforest. The Canopy Walkway is suspended between trees at a height of 40m and offers an excellent opportunity to observe wildlife above the grounds. At hotsprings, you will have a chance to soak yourselves in the hot sulphuric waters renowned for its therapeutic properties.
  • After Poring, we continue the tour to Sabah Tea. Check in, and later proceed to experience the handling of the blowpipe and Batik Painting.
  • Dinner will be served at the Sabah Tea Restaurant.
  • Overnight : Sabah Tea Plantation.
  • Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Itinerary Day 3 (Tuesday): Kampung Kiau (Kiau Village) – Kinabalu National Park – Poring Hotspring – Sabah Tea Plantation

  • Breakfast. Enjoy the fresh morning air and go for a morning walk around the Sabah Tea Plantation, the largest tea producing factory in Sabah. Enjoy the sunrise and immerse yourself in the lush surroundings of the green carpet and unwind before continuing with the days’ tours. Take a guided tour to discover how “RAINFOREST” raw tea leaves are processed and packed for export. Rainforest tea will certainly make a very special and unique gift!
  • Check out and depart to Kinabatangan. With lunch en route, drive through scenic countryside, local villages and plantations. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey takes about 3-4 hours with a short boat trip at the end to take you to the lodge.
  • Check in upon arrival and after a short rest take a river cruise for a wildlife sightseeing at around 1600hrs.
  • The lower reaches of Kinabatangan River have the greatest concentration of wildlife in Borneo. You will probably be able to spot one of the most distinctive native inhabitants of the land, the bizarre looking Proboscis Monkeys with their big noses and bellies.
  • Return to the lodge after the boat tour. Overnight at simple lodge (no air-condition) along the Kinabatangan River.
  • Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Itinerary Day 4 (Wednesday): Kinabatangan River – Gomantong Cave – Sandakan

  • Wake up to the sounds of Borneo as birds and most wildlife are most active just before daylight. Therefore, we will take a 1½-hour boat trip in the midst of the dramatic change of colors in the horizon as dawn sets in at six o’clock in the morning. The colourful birds of the Kinabatangan region make this boat ride an interesting one. Some of the bird species found here are the elegant egrets, kingfishers, oriental darter, the swift, vividly coloured bee-eaters, and hornbills.
  • Return to the lodge for breakfast and check-out.
  • Travel by boat to Bilit Village from the lodge and meet the Orang Sungai Tribe (literally means the people of the river). Visit their homes and cook local lunch with them and later dine with the family. After that, travel overland to Sandakan passing through scenic countryside, local villages and plantations. En-route, we will drop by Gomantong Cave, famous for nesting swiflets which the nests are used to make birds nest soup, a Chinese delicacy that is believed to be good for the complexion.
  • Check in upon arrival at hotel and rest of the day is at leisure.
  • Overnight Sabah Hotel or similar.
  • Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch

Itinerary Day 5 (Thursday): Sandakan – Selingan Island

  • Breakfast and check-out. Depart hotel and transfer to the jetty for the boat departing at 0930hrs to Turtle Island.
  • Depending on weather conditions, the journey takes about an hour to Selingan Turtle Island which lies 40km north of Sandakan in the Sulu Sea off Sabah’s East Coast. Selingan Turtle Island is the main nesting area for the Green Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles.
  • Free at leisure after lunch. The island is ideal for relaxing, swimming and snorkeling.
  • After dinner, we will wait for news from the Park Rangers on the sighting of any turtles that have come ashore to lay eggs. Witness the collection of eggs from the nesting site and relocating them in the hatchery for conservation purposes. If there are any hatchings at the nursery, you will get to see them being released to the open sea.
  • Overnight at Selingan Turtle Island Chalet (basic, communal bathroom or attached bathroom chalet).
  • Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Note: Conservation fee of MYR60.00 per visitor will be levied commencing 01st January 2011 and payable directly by clients upon arrival at the island.

Itinerary Day 6 (Friday): Selingan Island – Sepilok Orang Utan – Sandakan Airport

  • Check-out after breakfast. Depart to the Sandakan Jetty for the boat at 0700hrs.
  • From there, depart overland to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre situated in the Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve to visit the Orangutans that have been orphaned, rescued from illegal captivity, or injured individuals. Here, they are being rehabilitated to be sent back to the wild when fit enough. Before experiencing the feeding of the Orang Utans, you will be invited to watch a video presentation which highlights the plight of the Orang Utans and the efforts taken to rehabilitate them.
  • After the tour, transfer to Sandakan Airport or hotel.
  • Meals provided: Breakfast.

  • We recommend your departure flight from Sandakan on Day 6 be after 1400 hours.
  • Although daily sightings of turtles laying eggs have been reported, it is not guaranteed.
  • Certain portions of the overland journey from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan, approximately a stretch of 56km is on unsealed road, certain amount of discomfort should be expected.

Things to bring:
Raincoat, hat, insect repellent, torch, personal toiletries, cotton material clothing, swimming attire, towel, body soap, walking shoes with rubber soles, a pair of leech socks or thick socks, binoculars, camera with fast film and suntan/block lotion.
