Itinerary: 09:30hrs – 13:00hrs Monsopiad Cultural Village in Penampang
Pick-up from hotel lobby and transfer to Monsopiad Cultural Village in Penampang (approx. 20 min drive from Kota Kinabalu city), home of the greatest Kadazan warrior in folkore.

On arrival, register at the reception counter, meet the local guide for the village and proceed to the restaurant for a welcome drink.

Visit the house of the legendary Monsopiad’s descendent where the 42 skulls of the warrior’s adversaries are still being kept. Be enthralled by the mysteries of Kadazan ancient folklore and see the massive monolith which Monsopiad planted about three hundred years ago.

Here, you could also visit a model of a traditional Kadazan native house, built using palm trees and bamboo. For a better understanding of Borneo culture, you will be invited to take part in the common traditional activities. Do be sure to taste their famous local rice wine, traditionally drunk through a straw.

Watch the Cultural Dance performance by the local villagers in their fascinating traditional costumes to make your visit a memorable one. Before your return to hotel, you can explore briefly parts of the Penampang district.

  • Meet at hotel lobby and proceed to Mari Mari Cultural Village, located 25 minutes away from the city.
  • Upon arrival at the entrance of the village, you will be teleported back to the times of ancient Borneo through the magical display of unique ingenious architecture, simulated lives and ritualistic ceremonies.
  • You will be ushered in to the warmth of different homes of the ethnicities of Sabah to get acquainted with each village tribe and experience their rich culture. Each home was built by descendants of the tribes they represent and offer you a truly genuine experience seeing everything in and around the village.
  • Check out the little demonstration huts in the village where daily routines of traditional Sabahan life come alive. Grab the chance to see blowpipe-making demonstration, fire-starting demonstration using bamboo, tattoo-making demonstration, and get an in-depth look at the mystical symbolism behind them.
  • See the natives use the tree barks to make a vest and a chance to dance and jump on a built-in Lansaran, a traditional trampoline-like floor. Also get a chance to sample Sabahan traditional delicacies from each ethnic group such as the Montoku (a type rice wine) and witness bamboo cooking.
  • Have fun and enjoy the cultural show performance by the tribes before proceeding for a delectable traditional meal.

NORTH BORNEO RAILWAY

Take a ride on the North Borneo Railway and experience the nostalgia of British North Borneo from the past. You will be boarding Borneo’s last surviving steam train from the tracks from Tanjung Aru Train Station, travel by rail to Kinarut before arriving in Papar.

The North Borneo Railway runs 36 miles between Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, and Papar, an agricultural town, known as the rice bowl of Sabah. It is the last of a fleet of steam engines that have piled the tracks through Borneo since the late 1800s.

Itinerary: Tanjung Aru – Kinarut – Papar – Kota Kinabalu City
Meet at hotel lobby and depart to Tanjung Aru Train Station to board the only railway track in Sabah which started running since 1896.

The railway track runs down south from Kota Kinabalu to Tenom (Pangi Station), it is approximately 134 km line length.

On board the North Borneo Railway locomotive takes you on a scenic countryside seeing to the first stop of Kinarut Town, to visit the Tien Shi Temple that is known for its fine statues.

Proceeding further down on the to Papar, visit the local wet market and the shop houses at Papar Town passing by some paddy fields, river and villagers along the way.

A traditional ‘Tiffin’ colonial lunch will be serving on board while enjoying the countryside view out from your seat.

Upon arriving back to the Tanjung Aru Train station, you will be transferred back to your hotel.

  • 0900hrs Pick-up from your hotel and transfer to Rumah Terbalik. Journey takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
  • 1000hrs Arrive at Rumah Terbalik and make a guided visit into the Upside Down House.
